Dr. Laura Shapiro is a local girl. She grew up right here in Charleston on James Island, and attended Porter-Gaud (Go Cyclones!). Her passion for medicine began early on- she volunteered at MUSC Children’s Hospital as a high school student, and was inspired by her father, a Pediatrician. Her developing commitment to medicine brought Dr. Laura to the University of Georgia (Go Dawgs!), where she earned her undergraduate degree in Biology in the Honors Program. There, she served her community at Georgia, teaching science to children in underserved schools. It was also at Georgia where Dr. Laura focused her interest in medicine to dentistry, eventually bringing her back home to attend the College of Dental Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina. Now, throughout these formative years, there was always a common thread- working with children. Dr. Laura was awarded the Pediatric Dentistry Award as a dental student, and upon graduating from dental school in 2009, she completed a 2 year Pediatric Dental Residency training program at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia. She completed this rigorous training in 2011, and became Board Certified by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry in 2012. Dr. Laura practiced in Philadelphia for four years following her residency training, and has since decided to move back to serve her home community. She currently educates dental students and Pediatric Dental residents as a Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatric Dentistry at MUSC, and feels fortunate for the opportunity to share her knowledge, training, and experience.
Dr. Laura is excited to treat your child’s oral health and help develop lifelong healthy habits in a calm, compassionate dental environment.
Dr. Laura enjoys spending her free time with her husband and one year old son. She loves barre and spin classes and going to the Mount Pleasant Farmer’s Market on Tuesday afternoons!
